Nine years on from the Brexit vote, it’s unsurprising to learn that the majority of the public now regret making such a huge gamble.

The failures of Brexit – and there have been far more failures than victories – are often blamed on the unexpected Covid-19 pandemic or Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. But it seems the public now knows that making such sudden and fundamental changes to a country, its economics and constitutional operations is a massive risk. Failure, I think we can now say, was always the most likely outcome.
