Trump's Middle East vacuum

For all our sake, Trump must think beyond the next couple of days

I cannot quite believe I am typing these words, but: I hope Donald Trump is thinking things through properly as he weighs up joining Israel’s war on Iran.

Just to be clear, this is not a comment on whether or not the US should join the Israeli campaign.

What I am specifically concerned about is whether or not Trump – not someone known for always having his best thinking cap on – is capable of understanding the possibly multi-decade implications of what he is currently considering.

The position of the Iranian opposition is that it does not want US help in overthrowing the regime. Leading dissident figures like Maryam Rajavi, leader of the People's Mujahedin of Iran, have repeatedly said that the job of overthrowing the Ayatollah is for regular Iranians.
