Where there is discord, may I bring more of it
Like all self-respecting writers, I am going to beg you for money.
Hello there. My name is Luke.
You may have seen my work before or seen me bleating on social media(s).
If you’ve got no idea who I am, here’s a short bio:
I am a freelance journalist and writer, currently writing for Foreign Policy Mag, the I Paper and quite a few other publications. I also work for a popular comedy show on Channel 4 called The Last Leg, but the humour stops there. Here’s a link to all my freelance stuff.
Until September 2024 I was CNN’s Europe brainbox-in-chief (not official title).
Before that, I was at the Telegraph editing the opinion pages. I left shortly after the Brexit referendum. More on that at a later date, but in case you are wondering: yes I did vote Remain and would again, though I am often critical of the modern EU.
I have covered a whole bunch of stuff over the years: the rise of extremism ; the decline of democracy; Brexit; security; and probably more stuff I cannot remember.
This being my first post, I thought I’d best leave it at a short intro. Helpfully, I have two stories out this weekend that are fairly representative of my work:
The first, published in the I Paper, is about how Starmer’s Brexit reset is talked about in Brussels. Includes a cracking quote from an official calling it the “Hashtag Reset”. This is a very common view: most in Brussels think the reset is vibes and nothing else right now. Full story here.
The other is in the New European and tries to answer the question: how extreme is politics in Britain? It turns out that as a nation we like authoritarianism and hold some pretty fruity views on how best to solve crime and immigration. Full story here.
If you made it this far, thank you, and I look forward to talking to you more in the future. If there is anything you think you would like to read from this guy (me), feel free to get in touch. I am a big fan of baseball, boxing, video games and loud things.
A proper post will follow soon.
Until next time.
